Canada Updates Super Visa Income Requirements Effective March 31, 2026
If you are planning to apply for a Super Visa to invite your parents or grandparents to Canada, this is an important update you should be aware of.

What is a Super Visa?
The Super Visa is a multiple-entry visitor visa designed specifically for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents. It allows them to visit family in Canada and stay for extended periods compared to a regular visitor visa (potentially several years, with long stays per entry).
To qualify, the child or grandchild in Canada must demonstrate sufficient income at or above the minimum required level (LICO) to financially support their relatives during their stay. For example, based on the most recent thresholds, the minimum income is approximately:
- $38,002 for a family of 2
- $56,724 for a family of 4
- $64,336 for a family of 5
What Changed on March 20, 2026?
On March 20, 2026, the Government of Canada announced important updates to how income is assessed under the Super Visa program. These changes will take effect on March 31, 2026.

- More Flexible Income Assessment
Previously, IRCC assessed only the most recent tax year. Under the new rules, sponsors can now use income from either of the two most recent tax years.
For example:
If your income in 2025 was $35,000 (below LICO), but in 2024 it was $46,720 (meeting LICO for a family of 3), you may rely on your 2024 income to qualify.
- Ability to Include Parents’ or Grandparents’ Income
A significant new change is that, if the sponsor’s income alone is insufficient, they may now include the income of the visiting parents or grandparents to meet the requirement.
For example:
If you need to demonstrate $64,336 (family of 5) but currently earn $60,000, and your parents have a stable income of approximately $6,000, their income may be added to help meet the threshold.
Who Does This Apply To?
These changes apply to:
- All applications submitted on or after March 31, 2026, and
- Applications that are already in process
Applicants must still provide proper documentation to support all declared income.
Overall Impact
This is a positive and practical update. It provides greater flexibility for families who previously fell slightly below the income requirement, while still ensuring that visiting parents and grandparents are adequately supported during their stay in Canada.
